From 1000’s of drone, underwater and coastal pictures submitted by the world’s greatest ocean photographers, Ocean Photographer of the Calendar year 2023 has introduced the overall and the unique group winners of its prestigious awards.
The Ocean Photographer of the 12 months has a straightforward mission: to glow a gentle on the attractiveness of our oceans and the threats they deal with.
Maritime biologist and amateur photographer Jialing Cai has been named Ocean Photographer of the Year 2023, with a stunning graphic (underneath) of a paper nautilus floating on a piece of ocean particles, photographed on a blackwater dive in the wake of a volcanic eruption in the Philippines.
Cai was motivated to get started shooting on blackwater dives just after finding out about “diel vertical migration,” when zooplankton moves from the deep ocean to the surface area at night time. “That hit me like lightning,” explained Cai. “My professor was telling me the deep sea was in just my attain, that it would appear to me. That realization was mind-blowing. It’s why [I’ve become] so obsessed with blackwater images.”
