Behind The Scenes At Grey’s Anatomy

3 min read

Grey’s Anatomy is by far the longest-running medical TV drama with 18 seasons under its belt and a 19th already having been ordered. The heart-pumping action, life-and-death situations as well as turbulent romances have kept fans glued to their TV screens.

The show is as well known for its on-screen moments as it is for its off-screen moments. Here are some of those (some good and some bad) which are stuck in our minds.

The Time Everyone Was Jealous of Kate Walsh

When Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes announced plans for a spin-off (Private Practice) for Kate Walsh’s Dr Addison Montgomery, the jealousy monster reportedly appeared on the set of ever-popular show. The rest of the Grey’s cast seemed to be instantly resentful of her.

Each of the members of the cast thought they’d be the one chosen to get their own show, and now they’re giving Kate the cold shoulder. Ellen Pompeo seemed particularly put out she felt that, as the star, she should have been asked.”

Ellen Pompeo Didn’t Actually Audition To Play Meredith Grey

Frequently, the audition process is an extensive and exhausting experience. It’ll take weeks, and even months, for the casting process to come into place. It requires many difficult decisions. While the Grey’s Anatomy’s audition process may seem challenging (and it may have been altogether), the choice to cast Ellen Pompeo as the main character came pretty easily, seemingly.

In actual fact, according to the actress, she didn’t even audition to play Meredith Grey. As she said in an interview with Backstage, she was offered the role quite early on by Shonda Rhimes as well as the network.

Back in the early years of the ’00s, as casting came along, Pompeo was in Moonlight Mile with Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon, and Jake Gyllenhaal. This film opened a few doors. When this opportunity presented itself, Pompeo’s agent told her to do it so that she could ‘just make some money’.

Katherine Heigl Dows Out Of The Emmy Race

Katherine Heigl was really a total series standout on Grey’s Anatomy. Her work netted her an Emmy win in 2007 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal as Izzie Stevens. However in June 2008, the actress pulled her name out of contention for another coveted award, and apparently blamed the material which she was given by writers as the reason why.

T.R. Knight Decides To Leave

Before Katherine Heigl’s exit, T.R. Knight made the difficult decision to leave the show. In the episodes which led up to his exit, the actor’s screen time became markedly less and less, favouring other characters story lines over his. As a result, T.R.’s last appearance on the show came at the end of season 5 in 2009 and was as memorable as crypto thrills no deposit bonus codes. T.R. appeared in more than 100 episodes and garnered an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2007.
